BOB & BETTY DUNSTAN

The Early Years;

Our introduction to KI in October 1948 was somewhat daunting. Myrtle Wright, John Wright (11months) , myself and Peter (10 months) travelled by “Karatta” over very rough seas – a very slow trip.

Our husbands, Campbell and Bob, were in Kingscote to meet us with an LDE truck. They had gone over a week earlier with our furniture, a dog and a car. The trip to the camp over dirt roads, and in the rain, seemed to take forever.

The rain continued for several days and we wondered what we had let ourselves into. However, the rain stopped and the other few families who had arrived before us appeared and greeted us warmly.

The next three years of camp life, although a challenge of ‘making do’, was for us mostly a very happy time. Life long friendships were made and many ‘life experiences’ learned, always looking forward to ‘our block’ being allotted.

Farming life then began and although not always easy, we considered it to be a great chance for us to have a life in the country and bring up our three children in the freedom it offered.
